Overview of the ÖIF Subsidy
The ÖIF individual subsidy for German courses is financial support provided by the Austrian Integration Fund for people who want to learn German but cannot pay for the course themselves. The goal is to facilitate integration through language support. The subsidy is aimed at people with a migration background who already live in Austria and wish to actively work on their language acquisition.
Important: The subsidy can be applied for a variety of course types – from an A1 basic course to job-related German courses (e.g., B2 or C1). Applications must be submitted before the course begins, either directly to the ÖIF or through certified course providers.
Who is eligible? Eligible are persons with a residence permit, recognized asylum seekers, people with subsidiary protection, and third-country nationals with an integration agreement.

It is important to stay motivated, attend regularly, and provide proof of attendance.
👉 If you want to integrate linguistically and professionally, this subsidy can be your first step toward a successful future in Austria.
Who is the ÖIF Subsidy Intended For?

The individual ÖIF subsidy is aimed at people with a migration background who want to improve their German skills but cannot cover the course fees themselves. This includes third-country nationals, recognized asylum seekers, persons with subsidiary protection, and recognized refugees.
Those who wish to actively participate in social and professional life particularly benefit, for example through job searches, further education, or social integration. It is important that course participants are willing to attend classes regularly and demonstrate progress.
👉 If you live in Austria and want to learn German, it is worth applying. Whether you are a beginner at A1 level or already advanced – with the right motivation and a suitable course, you can make rapid progress with government support.
Which German Courses Are Funded?
The ÖIF funds a wide range of German language courses – from A1 to C1, including special courses such as integration courses, literacy courses, and job-specific courses.
Whether you are just starting or want to improve your German skills for your job: the subsidy is flexible. Even weekend courses, evening courses, or intensive courses can be funded – provided they are offered by a certified provider such as IFU Sprachschulung GmbH.
Tip: Choose the course that fits best with your daily life and learning goals. Your course provider will gladly assist you with course selection and the application process.

Requirements for Funding

To receive funding, certain requirements must be met. These include:
- Residence permit or integration agreement
- Residence in Austria
- Need for language support
- Willingness to participate and motivation
In addition, the application must be submitted before the course begins. It is important that the course is booked with an ÖIF-certified provider.
👉 The better you can explain your situation and your goal, the higher your chances of approval. Ask us – we will help you with every step.
How Do I Apply for Funding?
You must first register in the ÖIF system – this is a mandatory step before applying. Registration can be done online, directly at the ÖIF, or with the support of your language school.
You can then submit the application in two ways
● directly through the language school (e.g., IFU Sprachschulung – we take care of everything for you)
● independently through the ÖIF online portal
Required Documents
● Valid passport or photo ID
● Meldezettel (residence registration)
● Valid residence permit
● If applicable, a motivation letter
● Course confirmation from the language school
👉 At IFU Sprachschulung, we guide you through every step – from collecting documents to submitting the application. Free of charge and uncomplicated.
Don’t wait – with us, you can start your German course safely and quickly!
How Much Funding Is Available?

The amount of funding depends on the course and your personal situation. In many cases, the ÖIF covers up to 100% of the course fees, especially for A1 or A2 integration courses.
👉 It is worth submitting an application, even if you are unsure. Many participants are surprised by how much support they actually receive.
What Does “Certified Provider” Mean?
A certified provider is a language institute that has been reviewed and approved by the ÖIF to conduct subsidized courses. Only with these providers is funding possible at all.
IFU Sprachschulung GmbH has been officially certified by the ÖIF for many years. This means: high quality, experienced trainers, modern methods, and transparent organization.
Important for you: Only with a certified provider like us can you safely apply for and use the funding – without risk or bureaucratic obstacles.

How Do I Find the Right Course?

First, you should consider what goal you want to achieve with the German course: everyday communication? Job application? Integration? After that, an appropriate course level (e.g., A2 or B1) and type (e.g., intensive or evening) can be chosen.
We provide personal advice and help assess your language level – for example, through a short placement test. Our goal is to ensure that you are neither over- nor underchallenged, but start exactly where you are.
👉 A well-chosen course significantly increases motivation and your learning success.
What Happens After Submitting the Application?
After submitting the application, the ÖIF reviews your documents and decides on the funding. This usually takes a few weeks. You will then receive a written approval or rejection.
If approved, you will receive a funding approval or an education voucher, allowing you to attend the course free of charge or at a reduced cost. It is important that you attend regularly and achieve the course objectives.
👉 If your application is rejected, we will help you submit a new one or find alternatives.

What Are My Obligations During the Course?

If you receive ÖIF funding, you commit to regular attendance and active participation. You usually need to provide proof of at least 80% attendance and complete the course within a specific period.
At the end of the course, there is often a final exam – for example, an ÖSD or ÖIF exam. This may also be subsidized by the ÖIF.
👉 Take the course seriously – then the funding is a real opportunity to advance linguistically and professionally.
How Does the Exam Work at the End of the Course?
At the end of many funded courses, a recognized language exam takes place, e.g., according to the ÖSD or ÖIF standard. These exams assess whether you have successfully reached the language level (e.g., A2, B1, or B2).
The exams usually consist of four parts: listening, reading, writing, and speaking. They are practice-oriented and based on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).
Good to know: The exam fee can also be subsidized by the ÖIF. Your course provider supports you with registration, preparation, and taking the exam.

What If I Drop Out or Encounter Problems?

If you have to drop out of the course for important reasons (e.g., illness, moving, starting a job), you should immediately inform your course provider and the ÖIF. With appropriate proof, consequences can be avoided, or the funding can be transferred to a later course.
If you encounter problems during the course – whether organizational or linguistic – your provider will support you with advice. Our goal is for you to successfully complete the course – without pressure or overload.
👉 Open communication helps find solutions and ensures you do not lose your funding.
Why Is an ÖIF Subsidy Worthwhile in the Long Term?
A funded German course opens doors – professionally, socially, and personally. With better language skills, you improve your chances on the job market, in education, in daily life, and when dealing with authorities.
The ÖIF subsidy makes it possible to attend high-quality courses that you might not otherwise be able to afford. This way, you invest in your future – free of charge or at a significantly reduced cost.
👉 Language skills are the key to integration. With the ÖIF subsidy, you have a strong partner by your side.
